SmartRent

Inside a Proptech Company as It Scaled to the NYSE.

How SmartRent built a content function that grew alongside the company — from startup to publicly traded, across multiple verticals, with millions of users and a content program to match.

The Client

SmartRent (NYSE: SMRT) is a leading provider of smart communities and smart operations solutions for the rental housing industry. When I joined the team, the company was scaling rapidly — expanding into new verticals, preparing for a public listing, and building out the infrastructure to support millions of users across some of the largest multifamily portfolios in the country.

The Role

I was brought in to help build out SmartRent's content marketing function, with a specific focus on two verticals the company was actively growing: UK and Student Housing. That scope expanded quickly.

Over nearly two years, I wrote and strategized across the full content mix — blog posts, case studies, whitepapers, email campaigns, quarterly long-form guides, and event support. I worked directly alongside the communications and marketing teams as SmartRent entered the NYSE, scaled through two acquisitions (SightPlan and iQuue), and grew its user base past two million.

Being embedded at a proptech company during that period gave me a front-row seat to how a high-growth proptech company makes decisions, aligns messaging across investors and customers, and builds a brand that holds up at every stage of growth.

The Work

Content at SmartRent had to do several jobs at once: educate a sophisticated multifamily audience, support a sales team across multiple verticals, rank for relevant keywords, and hold up to the scrutiny of public market stakeholders.

Standout pieces:

  • Why Technology is a Natural Fit for ESG Analysis — A three-part blog series educating property stakeholders on smart technology's role in ESG scoring. The series led directly to a webinar with SmartRent's Chief Product Officer, attracting hundreds of RSVPs, and initiated a sustainability guide that was still in progress when I left.

  • Venterra Realty Management Upgrades Tech With Impressive Results — A case study documenting one of SmartRent's flagship customer relationships, showing measurable outcomes for one of multifamily's most respected operators.

  • Ultimate Guide to Self-Guided Tours — A comprehensive long-form guide built to support SmartRent's self-guided tours product, written for operators evaluating the technology. (available upon request)

The Results

As part of SmartRent's content team, I contributed to a period of significant organic growth — the domain's organic traffic doubled from 9,432 to 19,109 monthly visits during my tenure, a 102% increase over 18 months.

Today, smartrent.com earns 20.2K monthly organic visits across 9,800 ranking keywords, with an Authority Score of 39 and AI search visibility across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and Gemini — signals that SmartRent's content is recognized as a credible source across the platforms increasingly shaping how buyers research.

Beyond that, I also:

  • Influenced 170+ unique prospects through email retargeting campaigns

  • Directly supported 10 sales professionals across the Student Housing and UK verticals with revenue-generating content

  • Scaled content output to support 2M+ users and two major acquisitions

“Amelia puts herself in the shoes of her readers, has great insight into what they're interested in, and asks thoughtful questions to ensure the content she delivers hits the mark.”
